A Family Trade Since 1951
J.A. Smith & Co. was established in 1985 by J. Allen Smith Jr. and Gregory J. Smith. But the Smith family's plumbing legacy began decades earlier — the patriarch, James A. Smith Sr., started his career in or about 1951 with the W.L. Hastings Company located in Elkridge.
James Sr. joined J.A. Smith & Co. in 1987 and worked full-time until he retired at age 65. He continued working part-time until his passing on February 3, 2015. He was a gifted plumber but an even better person, and he is greatly missed.
J. Allen Smith Jr. started his career with the Garrett & Hidey Plumbing Company in Ellicott City around 1976 and served as President of J.A. Smith & Co. from 1985 until his retirement on December 31, 2020. We miss him but are glad he's enjoying the retired life.
Gregory J. Smith started his career with the WL Hastings Company around 1983 and helped start J.A. Smith & Co. in 1985. He is now President and co-owner of the company, continuing the family tradition of quality craftsmanship and honest service.
Brett J. Smith started at J.A. Smith almost at birth — sweeping floors, painting equipment, and cleaning in the summers. He came on full-time in 2008 and purchased J. Allen Smith Jr.'s share of the company in 2021, becoming Vice President and co-owner. With three generations now at the helm, J.A. Smith & Co. provides plumbing, heating, electrical, and sewer services across 10 Maryland counties.
